Haiti Earthquake Emergency
Last updated: February 10, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
The death toll from the Haitian earthquake has increased to 230,00 people, according to Haitian government officials.
This increase does not account for people who may have been buried by family members or other unaccounted methods from the January 12, 2010 earthquake. The current death toll is similar to the number of those who died form the 2004 Asian tsunami, according to the Associated Press.
Islamic Relief is heightening aid efforts in Haiti and distributing food, water, and tents to an additional 5,000 quake victims.
Islamic Relief has already set up one of the first organized camps in Port-au-Prince, where about 1,200 people who were sleeping in the streets of the Delmas 33 neighborhood are seeking refuge.
Each of the approximate 100 families staying at the camp received a 13 x 13 sq. ft. tent, a kitchen set and a hygiene kit.
A shipment of another 1,000 tents arrived a few days ago and Islamic Relief has nearly finished setting up a second camp in Accra Nord (Delmas 33 municipality) with 600 tents for 600 families.
Islamic Relief has also distributed food and water to 1,300 families (1100 on the new campsite and 200 on the old site). The remaining 400 tents will be used for another site that is yet to be identified in close coordination with shelter cluster and local authorities.
Islamic Relief’s approach has been focused on forming and supporting community based camp management committees to ensure sustainability and security of the camp.
Your continued support is necessary, as the victims' wounds heal and the focus shifts to long-term development.

Provision of shelter is still an urgent need for hundreds of thousands of Haitian quake victims. Lack of food, water, medicine, and shelter have forced people to wander into the countryside. Many of them have nowhere to go.
Thousands upon thousands of the estimated 3 million earthquake-affected people are sleeping in the streets and in makeshift shelters, hoping for international aid to save them.

Islamic Relief USA initially launched a $1 million appeal to help the victims, but raised it to $2.5 million in the wake of the tragedy.
Islamic Relief USA has also worked closely with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to ship 160,000 pounds of much-needed to Haiti. The shipment includes medical equipment, blankets, first-aid kits, water filtration bottles, wheelchairs, and other much-needed aid.
Please donate today to help Haiti's earthquake-affected people survive and rebuild their lives.
Every part of Port-au-Prince was either damaged or destroyed by the quake. Homes, schools, hospitals, even the National Palace where the president resides, were all decimated.
Injured children that lost contact with their parents are taking refuge in collapsed buildings and under debris.
Haiti’s infrastructure is already very modest and has now been brought to its knees by the quake. Disease, hunger and lawlessness are taking their toll on the people.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, and is also one of the most densely populated and least developed. Nearly 80 percent of Haiti's 9 million people live in poverty.
