Myanmar Cyclone Emergency

$6 Million Appeal Launched

Myanmar Cyclone Emergency (last updated on 6-25-08)

Seven weeks after Cyclone Nargis battered Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Delta emergency aid has reached less than 50 % of those affected.

The devastating storm hit Myanmar on May 2, 2008 and killed over 78,000 people, with another 56,000 people missing. The worst storm to hit Asia in over 25 years, the cyclone has left nearly 2.4 million people throughout the country destitute and in desperate need of aid.

Many survivors are still without roofs over their heads and are surviving in temporary shelters made from natural materials. But these makeshift shelters are not waterproof and leave many exposed to heavy rains as well as at risk of disease.

Tens of thousands of survivors in the densely populated and worst-affected region of Irrawaddy Delta face a growing risk of infectious disease such as dysentery from contaminated water supplies and poor sanitation. Those in need of shelter also need mosquito nets, blankets and other basic household items.
