Sowing the Seeds of Hope
“What I like about the support that the Islamic Relief field workers give me is that I now know that there other like me,” said Mavis*, an HIV positive mother enduring the stigma of HIV and struggling to provide for her only son, Moses.
In addition to the attention and comfort that field workers give Mavis, her son is supported by Islamic Relief, which means that the family is provided with monthly food parcels, medical transport and help arranging exemption from school fees.
Despite the most intensive care, Mavis’ health deteriorated in 2008 and she was taken by Islamic relief staff to a specialized health center for those living with HIV.
“I was taken to the hospital by Islamic Relief and I am now on [antiretroviral treatment],” Mavis recounted to an Islamic Relief field worker.
Islamic Relief provided Mavis with high quality healthcare, a tutorial on living with HIV and follow-up treatment; most importantly, Islamic Relief instilled her with hope.
“The people at the hospital were so good to us…There are many people at the hospital and you find out that you are not the only who is sick,” Mavis said, indicating the hardship of enduring the stigma of HIV.
Islamic Relief’s seminars and outreach programs helped educate the community on the reality of living with HIV, which have contributed to Mavis’ ability to remain at ease despite her condition—a luxury she couldn’t dream of before.
“The medication is very good for me. Before I could not sit and talk with some for five minutes because I used to get very tired. Now I can laugh for twenty minutes!” Mavis said, thanking Islamic Relief’s donors for their support.
