Afghanistan

Continuous Conflict

Afghanistan’s harsh, mountainous landscape has been the scene of over 30 years of conflict and insecurity.

Foreign invaders, local warlords and the lack of international support have all contributed to the suffering in Afghanistan. Consecutive wars and domestic instability have debilitated the economy and left homes, schools and infrastructure in shambles.

Constantly reminding Afghanistan's people of the years of bloodshed, the country remains littered with millions of land mines. More innocent civilians were killed or maimed by landmines in Afghanistan than in any other country.

Empowering through Education

Knowing that education opens doors of opportunity, Islamic Relief has rehabilitated countless schools in Afghanistan, supplying them with books and supplies.

Islamic Relief also supports hundreds of orphans through One-to-One sponsorship in Afghanistan.

In Kabul, Afghanistan's capitol and biggest city, Islamic Relief operates a vocational training and language education center that helps orphans and widows secure their future through education.  Officaly called the Kabul Integrated Family Development Center, about 160 students graduated in 2008.

Poverty and Poppies

Most of Afghanistan’s 27 million people live below the poverty line, many of them surviving on less than $1 a day.

Most Afghans make their living through agriculture, but conflict and drought has severely disrupted livelihoods.  Many farmers have turned to growing opium poppies, fueling the international drug trade. Poppy cultivation increased by 47% in 2006 and Afghanistan is now the world’s largest producer of opium.

Hoping to combat the Afghan people’s dependence on opium for survival, Islamic Relief has provided vocational training to rural villagers and offers Islamic micro-financing loans to entrepreneurs.  In 2008, Islamic Relief distributed seeds and fertilizer to local farmers in four districts of Kabul, and operates similar projects all of over the country year-round.

Islamic Relief in Afghanistan

Islamic Relief has been working in Afghanistan since 1992, providing aid services to people who have suffered for generations.

Poverty, war, natural disasters and drug trafficking have all contributed to the anguish of the Afghan people.  In response to the 2001 conflict in the region, Islamic Relief opened a permanent office in Afghanistan.

Early projects combined emergency relief with economic development initiatives, in addition to drought relief and food assistance.  Current projects include education, water and sanitation, livelihood support and rebuilding community infrastructure.
