Poverty & Unemployment

Albania is one of the poorest countries in Europe. 

With about 4 million people calling Albania home, more than a quarter of them live under the national poverty line.

After years of war and destruction, poverty and unemployment have made Albania’s already grim humanitarian situation grow steadily grimmer.

Islamic Relief runs several projects to help Albanians break free from poverty.  Islamic Relief Community and Training Centers in Albania provide vocational training and education to those who lack basic skills for employment.

Islamic Relief also collaborated with the World Food Program and instituted a “Food for Work” project, allowing nearly one million Albanians the dignity of self-sufficiency and the satisfaction of participating in rebuilding their society.

Orphans in Need

Years of political upheaval, social unrest and deadly violence has orphaned thousnads of children in Albania. 

Islamic Relief’s One-to-One Orphan Sponsrship Program allows Albanian children to remain with a guardian who many not have been able to afford care for them.  Being able to stay in a loving and caring environment not only hels these orphans develop and grow, but helps them recover emotionally and psychologically after losing one or both parents.

Islamic Relief in Albania

Islamic Relief started working Albania in 1991, after war and unrest had effectively cut Albania off from the world, and the people were suffering.

Responding urgently, Islamic Relief sent large shipments of food and clothing. By the spring of 1992, Islamic Relief founded an office in Tirana, maintaining a constant and dependable presence ever since.

Islamic Relief’s projects in Albania include education, livelihood training and support of widows and orphans.
