Overpopulation & Poverty

Bangaldesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world and also ranks among the poorest.

The United Nations’ 2007/2008 Human Development Report (HDR) estimates that more than 40 percent of Bengalis live in poverty. The HDR also approximates that more than 80 percent of Bengalis live on less than $2 a day and more than 40 percent live on less than a $1 a day.

Natural Disasters

More than half of Bangladesh’s 180 million people rely on agricultural land for their livelihood, according to the most conservative estimates of the HDR.

Tropical storms and coastal flooding hinder many Bengalis’ abilities to sustain their families through agricultural means and thus poverty and suffering have continued to take their toll on the population.

Islamic Relief in Bangladesh

Islamic Relief began working in Bangladesh following a 1991 cyclone, providing emergency relief to hundreds of thousands of victims.

Responding urgently, Islamic Relief not only supplied victims with necessities like shelter, food, water, clothing and sanitation facilities, but instilled within the victims a sense of hope.

Nearly two decades later, Islamic Relief continues instilling hope with over 425,000 Bengalis currently benefitting from relief and development projects.
