Chad

Poverty & Substandard Living

Limited by its landlocked position, high energy costs, and a history of instability, Chad is one of the 10 poorest countries in the world.

A staggering 80 percent of Chad’s population lives under the national poverty line, according to the most current estimates of the US Central Intelligence Agency World Factbook.

Less than 10 percent of the population enjoys the luxury of improved sanitation facilities and about 60 percent lack access to an improved water source, according to the United Nations 2007/2008 Human Development Report (HDR).

With at least 80 percent of Chad’s people relying on agriculture for survival, according to the CIA World Factbook, recurring droughts and natural disaster quickly turn villages into cemeteries.

Islamic Relief has implemented numerous projects in response to the suffering in Chad. In addition to water and sanitation projects, Islamic Relief launched a livelihood support project as well projects in education and vocational training.

Despite thousands being served by Islamic Relief’s projects, there remain millions who require your support for survival. Please support Islamic Relief’s crucial work in countries like Chad and donate today.

Incessant Violence

In addition to poverty, malnutrition, disease and a lack of technological advancement, three decades of civil war has stained Chad’s northern and eastern regions with blood.

Fanning the flames of suffering, refugees pour into the country from two directions as the conflicts in Darfur and the Central African Republic rage on.  In addition to the 178,000 internally displaced people living in Chad, nearly 300,000 refugees from Sudan and CAR are currently residing in the country, according to the CIA World Factbook.

Refugee camps and host villages were quickly overwhelmed by the influx of refugees and IDPs, resulting in widespread suffering.  In 2007, Islamic Relief launched a project titled Emergency Assistance to Displaced People.

Besides thousands of beneficiaries receiving aid parcels, Islamic Relief constructed temporary shelter, wells for drinking water and sanitation facilities for the thousands of refugees and IDPs.

Please donate today to support Islamic Relief's work in countries where suffering is widespread, like Chad.

Islamic Relief in Chad

Islamic Relief began working in Chad in 2006 and opened a field office in May 2007, responding to a humanitarian crisis –the Darfur conflict had spilled over Chad’s eastern border and as a result the humanitarian situation was steadily deteriorating.

Islamic Relief responded quickly, implementing an emergency project to help alleviate the suffering of the refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Chad.

Today, Islamic Relief continues to serve Chad’s people and the refugees in the country with water and sanitation projects, livelihood support and seasonal Ramadan and Udhiyah/Qurbani food distributions.
