Poverty

Most famous for the Pyramids of Giza and the Nile River, many are unaware that Egypt’s economy has experienced significant downturn in recent years.

More than 40 percent of the population lives on less than $2 a day, according to 2007/2008 United Nations Human Development Reports.

Staggering unemployment rates coupled with economic decline has fueled the rise of poverty in Egypt.

Islamic Relief’s seasonal Ramadan and Udhiyah/Qurbani food distributoins have helped thousands of Egyptians and their families in times of hardship.

Due to lack of funding, many of the services provided in Egypt are in danger of being discontinued. Please donate today to help support Islamic Relief’s work in Egypt.

Islamic Relief in Egypt

Islamic Relief started working in Egypt in 2001, helping generate income for poor Egyptians and assisting disabled persons, particularly children.

More than 2 million people are disabled in Egypt. Although the Egyptian government stresses the importance of assisting the disabled, only about 10 percent of disabled Egyptians receive government aid.

Islamic Relief constructed two Early Intervention and Rehabilitation Centers, where developmental training is provided for children with any combination of motor, mental and communication disabilities.

Activities include behavior improvement, speech and physiotherapy sessions, as well as medical, psychological, and developmental treatment.

Islamic Relief has also undertaken Ramadan and Udhiyah/Qurbani food distribution projects in Egypt, distributing food to over 12,000 people every year, including widows and orphans.
