Emergency Disaster Response
Hurricane Katrina rocked the Gulf Coast in August 2005, killing more than 1,300 people and displacing over a million.
The costliest natural disaster in the United States’ history, the damage and recovery cost from the storm was estimated at over $75 billion.
Islamic Relief immediately responded to the needs of the victims, committing $2 million for relief projects. Initial efforts included working in the affected areas of Louisiana and Mississippi, and assisting evacuees in Texas.
Working closely with federal officials and local organizations, Islamic Relief's work in Louisiana focused on assisting hurricane victims in two shelters, while providing an elaborate system of goods distribution between the various relief distribution sites.
In Mississippi, Islamic Relief concentrated on alleviating the suffering in the coastal city of Biloxi, which was one of the hardest hit by the storm.
Islamic Relief also provided displaced persons who sought refuge in Texas with emergency shelter, food, educational supplies, and more.
The relief and rehabilitation efforts in response to Hurricane Katrina represent the largest domestic operation in Islamic Relief’s history.
Day of Dignity
Every Ramadan, Islamic Relief reaches out to disadvantaged Americans in major cities around the United States, providing them with basic necessities like food, water, clothing and blankets.
Hygiene kits were also distributed and health screenings, HIV/AIDS tests and first aid were also offered.
In 2008, distributions were held in nearly twenty cities across the country and each city was awarded a grant to assist in purchasing items.
Dubbed the 'Day of Dignity' for the pride and hope Islamic Relief USA hopes to promote within local underprivileged communities, more than 20,000 people benefit from this event every year.
Islamic Relief knows that such events would not be possible with the thousands of volunteers dedicating their time and the thousands of donors supporting our mission to alleviate poverty.
Still, however, we need your support to help instill hope in the heart of those suffering around the world.
Please donate today . Your donation could help a family that is struggling to survive.
